"From your Cobber, J L McCarthy." Studio portrait of 570 Private (Pte) James Langford McCarthy, 4th Machine Gun Company posed as if firing a Vickers Maxim .303 machine-gun. The gun is displayed with ammunition belt and box and a handful of "spent" cartridges have been arranged near the operator's feet. Originally from the Falkland Islands, Pte McCarthy was a railway worker from Lismore, NSW prior to enlistment and embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Orsova on 6 December 1916. Later transferring to the 10th Machine Gun Company he was wounded in action and returned to Australia on 24 January 1919. This image is from the collection of 507 Pte John Thomas Frederickson, 2nd Machine Gun Company.
