Description

Group portrait of nine sailors, part of the crew of SMS Goeben (renamed in Turkish in 1915 as Yavuz Sultan Selim). The sailors have their respirators ready for use. The inscription reads:"9(?) Balkan warriors; 4 years fought for Germany's honor in the black sea and the Mediterranean; Oh who had thought there/at that point That we had already (?) spent there; S.M.S. Goeben 20.1.18 After the thrust in the Aegean sea." The date is significant for the action which took place then, between the two Turkish cruisers Yavuz and Midilli, and British shipping in the Dardanelles. The action resulted in the sinking of the Midilli and significant damage to the Yavuz, in both cases by mines.
