Description

Album of 60 pages with 438 photographs; the cover being made of fabric with illustrations of the pyramids in Egypt. The album belonged to NX76519 Lieutenant (Lt) Rita May Hind, Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) and Australian Army Medical Women's Service (AAMWS) who enlisted on 17 October 1941, served in the Middle East from 1941 to 1943, then in Australia and was discharged in 1947. The album illustrates her service from pre-embarkation in 1941 to the Middle East in 1941 and 1942. The images include portraits of family, friends, fellow nurses, local Arab residents and leave. The medical facilities and camps include Kilo 89; 2/1 Australian General Hospital (AGH); 2/7 AGH; Voluntary Aid Detachments (VAD); and the 22nd Indian General Hospital. Places include Palestine; Gaza; Bethlehem; Jerusalem; Tel-Aviv; Ascalon; Dimra; Beersheba; Haifa; Dead Sea; River Jordan; Old Jericho; Rehovot; Cairo; Alexandria; Beirut; Baalbek; and Rafa.
