Graham, Robert David (Sergeant, b.1920)
Collection of letters written by NX73070 Sergeant Robert David Graham of 2/1st Battalion to his fiance during the Second World War. The letters reflect Sgt Graham's love and longing for his fiance, thoughts of his homecoming, their upcoming marriage and future life together. Also included are souvenirs collected in the field, comprised of two bank notes and a photograph of an anonymous Japanese family. Letters discuss various aspects of military life and operations in New Guinea. A letter dated 3 March 1945 mentions the Battle of Nambut Hill on 17 February 1945, where Sergeant Graham was awarded a Military Medal for soldierly skill and courage. Sergeant Graham transferred to the British Commonwealth Occupation Force when 2/1 Battalion disbanded in December 1945.
