SERIA, BORNEO. 1 JULY 1945. MEMBERS OF 3 PLATOON, 2/3 FIELD COMPANY, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS AND THEIR NATIVE LABOURERS UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAIN R H BEUKEMA, NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES ARMY, ARE WORKING TO EXTINGUISH OILWELL FIRES ON THE SERIA FIELD . TO DATE THEY HAVE EXTINGUISHED 17 OUT OF THE 35 FIRES BURNING. SHOWN ABOVE, STAFF-SERGEANT M C BUTLER (2) EXAMINING HIS BADLY SCORCHED ASBESTOS GLOVE AFTER AN UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO REACH THE VALVE ON A BURNING OIL PIPE AND TURN IT OFF.
