The Australian pilot in this photograph is 417856 Pilot Officer David Myrddin Hughes of Prospect South Australia. He joined 467 Squadron RAAF on 16 July 1944 and left the Squadron on 14 December 1944. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for '. . numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty'. He survived the war, returned to Australia and discharged from the RAAF.
On 14 March 1949 he re-joined the RAAF and he was posted to the RAAF School of Air Navigation at East Sale, Victoria. On 26 September 1949 he was the pilot of an Avro Anson, serial AW660, on a routine training flight near Lakes Entrance Victoria when the aircraft and four other crewmen disappeared. Several days later some wreckage washed ashore and it was deemed by the authorities at the time that the Anson had impacted the sea at high speed and that there were no survivors nor bodies recovered.
