Description
SERIA, BORNEO, 10 JULY 1945. MEMBERS OF 3 PLATOON, 2/3 FIELD COMPANY, RAE, WORKING UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAIN R H BEUKEMA, ROYAL NETHERLANDS INDIES ENGINEERS, MADE AN EFFORT TO EXTINGUISH A LARGE OILWELL FIRE LEFT BURNING BY THE RETREATING JAPANESE BY USING A FOAMITE-WATER MIXTURE. ALTHOUGH THE WATER WAS ONLY 100 YARDS FROM THE WATER'S EDGE THE LIMITED LENGTH OF AVAILABLE HOSE PRESENTED PROBLEMS WHEN THE TIDE RECEDED. TO OVERCOME THIS THE MEN EXPLODED TWO JAPANESE 50 KILOGRAM BOMBS ON THE BEACH TO FORM A CRATER WHICH WOULD HOLD THE NECESSARY WATER. SHOWN ABOVE, RIGGING UP THE HOSES BETWEEN THE CRATER AND THE PUMP.
