SCARLET BEACH, FINSCHHAFEN AREA, NEW GUINEA. 1944-03-13. THE SIGN TO THE RIGHT MARKS THE POINT OF THE ATTEMPTED JAPANESE INVASION. TWO WRECKED JAPANESE BARGES LIE IN THE BACKGROUND. THE BARGES IN THE LANDING WERE DESTROYED BY TROOPS OF THE 24TH INFANTRY BRIGADE GROUP ASSISTED BY A DETACHMENT OF THE SHORE BATTALION OF THE 532ND ENGINEER BOAT AND SHORE REGIMENT, UNITED STATES ARMY. THE SIGN TO THE LEFT RECORDS ACHIEVEMENTS MADE BY UNITS OF THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS SUPPORTING THE 20TH INFANTRY BRIGADE GROUP.
