Choi Yung Kil (front left) with members of 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), identified left to right are: 31953 Private (Pte) Ronald Tully; 3101017 Captain Bryan Gandevia; 22802 Sergeant Thomas ‘Pukka’ Murray GM; 21026 Corporal James ‘Scotty’ McGivern; 3400044 Pte Raymond Kearney; 34006 Pte Kenneth ‘Kay’ Peart; and, VX700033 Chaplain Elzear Phillips OAM. Choi was a 16 year old orphan who was adopted by 3RAR during the retreat after the Battle of Pakchon. Choi worked as a medical orderly for the battalion and was given the nickname, ‘Rhubarb’. The battalion raised funds to continue his education and he eventually migrated to Australia in 1969 with his wife and daughter.
