AWA radio telephone service
Description
On 4 February 1946, AWA (Amalgamated Wireless Australasia) a Radio Telephone Service between Rabaul and Sydney, NSW. A person wishing to call the mainland books a time with the operator who contacts the GPO, Sydney, NSW, who then in turn contacts the person to be called. A standard telephone booth is used by the caller. The Rabaul station operates on a frequency of 17.5 mc/S at a power of 500 watts. Calls may be booked from the mainland to any person in Rabaul. Also identified: Private Munn, 22nd Australian Infantry Battalion, 11th Division; Mr E F Bishken, assistant in charge operations; Mr F Frank, who is in charge of the station.
