Commemoration service Rabaul
Description
During May 1942, 800 Allied prisoners of war and internees embarked on the vessel Montevideo Maru at Rabaul for shipment to Japan; she was subsequently sunk en route. On 23 January 1946, four years after the landing of Japanese on Rabaul, a commemoration service was held at Vulcan Beach to honour those who lost their lives.
