Visit by Brigadier Dougherty to Macassar, Celebes
Description
On 20 September 1945, 251858 (NX148) Brigadier Ivan Noel Dougherty DSO, Commander, 21 Australian Infantry Brigade, arrived at Macassar for an official visit. During his stay he inspected a guard of honour formed by English Naval ratings who had been prisoners of the Japanese for three and a half years. Also he read a proclamation to the natives of the island announcing their official liberation. Special note: English Naval ratings in Guard of Honor are wearing Australian slouch hats. Also identified: 18001 (QX6378) Lieutenant Colonel Richard Harold Marson and The Sultan of Tenggarong on the steps ouutside the Sultan's Palace.
