Japanese prisoners at Torokina
Description
The Japanese garrison on Nauru Island was transferred by sea to a special compound at Torokina. Daily inspection of compound was carried out by SX1442 Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Ronald Matthews, 9 Australian Infantry Battalion, War Compound Commandant, and his officers. Special attention was made to inspection of the Japanese cook's hands and nails for cleanliness. 16572 Lance Corporal William John King, 9 Australian Infantry Battalion, on guard with a Vickers Machine gun on one of the control towers.
