A Cinesound propaganda short on the theme of doing without produced for the Department of Information and released by the National Films Council. Title over dolly out of church service - sound track is the recitation of the Lord's Prayer. Congregation kneeling. Scene change to European women receiving bread rations, Chinese women and children crying - soundtrack is the word "bread" repeated over and over. Studio scene of hungry wounded Australian soldier in jungle. Scene from newsreel of C-47 Dakota flying in New Guinea. Wounded soldier signals to the aircraft. Studio scene of pilot. Newsreel scene of parachute drop from Dakota. Studio scene of two women packing dehydrated emergency rations - one comments that she wouldn't like to eat those rations. Studio scene in jungle setting showing emergency rations being opened. Australian soldiers converse while preparing meals with dehyrated ration packs. One of the soldiers says he wishes he had a steak. Restaurant scene - two middle age men sitting at a table one asks the waitress if he could have a steak - he say he has not had a steak for six days. The waitress responds that there are soldiers in New Guinea that haven't had a steak in six months. Scene in public bar - civilians standing next to bar complaining to publican about shortages, beer, cigarettes, butter, meat etc. Publican points out that in England shortages are far worse than Australia and that Australia has to export food to feed troops overseas as well as two armies based in Australia. Tea house in Australia- a rich woman complains to her friend about restrictions on food. Working class English woman explains to her friend that the war is not that bad and they are "doing alright". Newsreel footage of bomb damaged London. Barber shop in Australia - customer complaining to another about wartime restrictions. The other customer turns out to be a soldier and chastises the complaing customer. Back to studio jungle scene - the wounded Australian soldier has crawled to air dropped supplies and begins eating the emergency rations. Scene change to framed photograph of Australian soldier on table his mother looking at photograph. Mother prays for soldier.
