Where the Aussies passed along Vasey Highway
Depicts the destruction to palm trees, houses and cars and the general devastation in Balikpapan area, Borneo, 1945. Max Dimmack (1922-2020) is a celebrated modern Australian landscape painter, former wartime soldier, art teacher and lecturer. He is well known for his figurative work, portraiture and landscapes. Initially Dimmack painted in a traditional, representative way before being inspired by French painter Georges Braques in the late 1940s when his work changed and became more expressionistic with reference to cubism. Dimmack enlisted in the Second World War on 12 January 1942 and was discharged on the 1 July 1946. He was deemed Unit draftsmen, a part of the signals unit as his commanding officer took note of his eye for art. The signals unit officially formed in May 1940. He eventually became a Corporal with the 7th Division Signals during the Second World War. During the war, he was purely concerned with capturing a 'visual record of the subjects' he encountered.
