The bathing place, Jordan
Description
Possibly painted close to Ghoraniyeh this painting shows Australian Light Horse units watering and swimming walers. In the early summer of 1918, Australian troops were stationed in the Jordan Valley. The hot weather and clear cool streams were attractive respites from the heat. Lambert said he "saw subject crowd on subject patrols, packhorses with ammunition, and naked light horse men swimming horses across the river; a feast of movement, a feast of colour, and the backgrounds the most refined imaginable." This painting shows men from an Australian Light horse unit watering and swimming their horses.
