Description

Portrait of Lieutenant Hugh Hunter Henderson, 2nd Australian Imperial. Lieutenant H Henderson (VX9994) served in the 2 Advanced Ordnance Workshop. Henderson was a prisoner of war, held captive in several camps across Italy and Germany. It is likely that Henderson was captured in North Africa given his internment at PG 78 in Sulmona, Abruzzo. In June 1943, officers were moved to Campo 19 in Bologna. Officers were able to take all of their possessions including the vast library, as well as food stocks. The conditions here however, where not as good. Henderson was then moved to Oflag VIIB at Eichstatt (POW no. 4258 RTA), which was subject to tighter regulations and discipline given the previous escape attempts of officers at Oflag VIB. Henderson was later promoted to Major (3357).
