Description

Portrait of SX7048 Private Lancelot Frederick Rosser 'Pop', 6th Australian Division, 2nd Australian Imperial Force, North African campaign. When the artist was instructed by Blamey to select someone from his unit to act as a batman driver Hele chose a friend named Lance Rosser, a veteran of the 1914-18 war who had enlisted in Adelaide on the same day as the artist. Rosser's job was to drive the 15cwt truck which Hele had been assigned and to help out in any way he could. The arrangement worked well until Rosser's health broke and he was repatriated to Australia. Hele completed a number of portrait drawings of Rosser, including this one done when they were still in Tobruk.
