Description
Making finishing adjustments to an Australian Army refueling launch, built in a factory yard far from the water, Slazenger's, Sydney. Slazenger's, with a payroll of 400 engaged in the manufacture of sports goods converted to a war-time production of small vessels with a labour force of 1400. Although the firm found it necessary to establish shipyards at Putney on the Parramatta River and on the Hunter River at Newcastle, the main centre of production was still at Alexandria, some distance from the water, consequently all craft built there had to be road transported to the water. Every foot of factory space was in use and even the roadway and lane ways in the factory area were utilised as assembly bays.
