Australian troops barrack, Ainaro
Description
Ainaro although situated inland was in effect the Base of the Australian Forces operating in Portuguese Timor. The "Lancer Force" Hospital was set up here in 1942 under Captain C R Dunkley, Australian Army Medical Corps, the Medical Officer of 2/2nd Australian Independent Company, and, in addition, a convalescent depot was established, a truly remarkable feat for a force fighting a guerilla action. Moreover, many sick, stragglers from the ill-fated "Sparrow Force" which had operated in the Koepang area, were nursed back to health and after training in commando tactics, took their place in the field again.
