Pilot's flying helmet : German Air Service
Flying helmet of rigid vegetable tanned leather leather neckflap and earflaps with buckle.Stitch attached are a central square profile brim edge and central comb running front to back. The ridges are padded with an unknown armature. The helmet is lightly worn and scuffed and is puctured by a bullet hole on one side. Minor corrosion of buckle, lace for leather liner broken. Pale surface scuffiing on earflaps. Ink stamp on inside back neck flap. Ribbon in sweatband broken. All outer surfaces have a green surface finish, possibly leather paint.
Australians of the 10th Company, Army Service Corps, claimed the destruction of a German aircraft shot down from the ground by a machine-gun at Haplincourt on the somme in April 1917. The pilot was wearing the standard-pattern rigid leather flying helmet. The aviator wearing this helmet was killed by the round which punctured the helmet.
