Steel British Helmet, 47th Battalion
Description
British 'Brodie' steel helmet with sandbag Hessian covering for camouflage. Wearers could smear mud on top of the helmet and it would adhere to the hessian and dry. This was used to camouflage soldiers' when they emerged above the trench line from snipers.
History / Summary
Over 7 and a half million of these Mark I model Brodie helmets were produced in the United Kingdom during the First World War. Australian troops were first issued the helmets in July 1916 and they were worn until the cessation of hostilities in November 1918.
