Keys of U-Boat U-461 destroyed by Sunderland U/461
Description
Set of 14 keys from U-Boat U461.
History / Summary
On 30 July 1943 F/Lt D. Marrows DSO DFC of 10 Squadron RAAF, flying Sunderland No U/461 took part in an attack on two 1200 ton 'milch cow' supply submarines and one 540 ton submarine, the U461. The Official History 'Air War against Germany & Italy 1939-43' (Herington) p.442 notes that in his final attack, and despite heavy fire from all three submarines, Marrows flew so low that he barely cleared the conning tower of U461, and managed to drop seven depth charges across the U-Boat. Marrows subsequently dropped his main dinghy for the 25 to 30 survivors. By an amazing coincidence, Sunderland U/461 had sunk U461.
