Description
1939 Black Wound Badge. Oval shaped pressed blackened steel. Obverse: A German steel helmet with a swastika on the left side, over crossed swords within a laurel wreath tied at the base with a bow. Reverse: A single vertical brooch pin.
History / Summary
Instituted on 1 September 1939 and awarded to military personnel wounded once or twice in action. This badge is part of a collection of Second World War German orders, decorations, badges and insignia acquired by Flight Lieutenant K G Hesketh, RAAF Historical Records Section, who was based in London, but who made a number of visits to Germany immediately after the Second World War.
