Description

Survivors of the sinking of HMAS Canberra are transferred to USS Patterson from USS BARNETT (AP-11, later APA-5, a transport, to which PATTERSON transferred CANBERRA's survivors for transport to Noumea. CANBERRA's mortally wounded captain, Captain F. E. Getting RAN, died on BARNETT en route. HMAS Canberra was sunk in action against the Japanese Navy on 9 August 1942 off Savo Island in the battle of Guadalcanal.
