Description

Troy Simmonds joined the Australian Army in 1991 and completed one tour of Somalia, three tours of East Timor, two tours of Iraq and six tours of Afghanistan. Simmonds served with the Special Air Service Regiment until his retirement from army life in 2012. The interview focusses on a period during "Slipper 1", Afghanistan, and he describes in detail an intense and prolonged close contact, alongside American forces, in which he and others were wounded, and how he used a chain from the vehicle to sheild himself from further rounds. He describes his wounding in some detail. He also discusses the recovery of EOD dog Sarbi, communications with family, and reflects on returning home and potential after effects of deployment.
