Arisaka Type 38 bolt action carbine. The breech ring is stamped with a chrysanthemum, three Japanese characters (Type 38) and on the left side the Nagoya arsenal mark and the serial number. The bolt has a straight arm and a round knurled cocking piece. It has a full wood stock and top hand guard that is held in place by a central barrel band and front end cap. Complete with a cleaning rod and a composite rubberized canvas sling.
This rifle and one ammunition pouch were taken from a dead Japanese sniper by Lieutenant Colin Thomas Halmarick. The sniper was one of a party of 30 to 40 Japanese which attempted to infiltrate a company position of the 2/4 Australian Infantry Battalion in the Danmap River area. The attack was commenced at 020515 I, but was successfully repulsed by small arms fire and artillery support. The enemy withdrew having lost five killed. Our own casualties were one killed and three wounded. The rifle belonged to one of the Japanese who was killed in the attack.
