Cricket trophy: 2/1 Machine Gun Battalion
Cricket trophy made from a 6 pounder shell with .50 BMG rounds on either side as handles. The bullets are attached to the shell with extra brass tubing bent into a 'U' shape to create two handles.
The front face has a rising sun badge at the top. A brass shield in the middle has the text 'A. A. AMENITIES Moresby Championship Cricket A. Grade. Won by 2/1 M/G Btn Nov 1943'. Below the shield is an image of Australia without Tasmania.
On the rear face is the engraving 'The Team, D.A. John Dorey Capt, Jim Garner, Joe Moore, Les Cowan, Bill Shegog, Harry Gray, Ray Webeck, Frank Evers, Joe Robinson, Ray Leeson, Ken Hobbs, Ken Nancarrow'.
Cricket trophy presented to the 2/1 Machine Gun Battalion unit team on November 20, 1943 while serving in Port Moresby. The unit team consisted of Douglas Dorey (NX33569) who was the team captain, Jim Garner (NX32466) who was the opening bowler for the team, Joe Moore (NX44271), Les Cowan (NX27718), Bill Shegog (SX1565), Harry Gray (NX47244), Ray Webeck (NX44269), Frank Evers (SX2104), Joe Robinson (NX2527), Ray Leeson (NX46104), Ken Hobbs (SX12409), Ken Nancarrow (VX3882). The cricket championship was run by the Australian Army Amenities Service.
