Naval Gun Aiming Rifle : SMS Emden
Description
Single shot, bolt action aiming rifle with an iron frame that clamps to the knox form. The barrel has an outer tube with a muzzle that has a large disc and an 'L' shaped bracket. The rifle has a brass action, stamped 10.5 cm S.K.L/40 and the serial number 66, and the bolt arm is straight. The serial number 19014 is stamped on the mounting plate. It does not have any stock fittings and has a hook for a trigger. Attached to the rifle is an old caption plate in brass with the details of the Sydney Emden action, the date and the names of the ships' captains.
History / Summary
This rifle from the SMS Emden was bolted to a 10.5cm calibre gun and used as an aiming weapon. The Emden was beached and destroyed by HMAS Sydney off the Cocos Keeling Islands in 1914.
