Members of the 51st Battalion Far North Queensland Regiment (FNQR) on an armed patrol off the Cape York Peninsula.
One of a series of photographs taken by Jack Picone while embedded with the Battalion in the Cape York Peninsula area in 1999. The 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment serves as a Regional Force Surveillance Unit (RFSU), carrying out reconnaissance and surveillance tasks in remote regions of Far North Queensland from Cardwell to the Torres Strait, Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf across to the Northern Territory border. The Battalion’s area of responsibility covers some 640,000 square kilometres. A major portion, approximately 30 per cent, of the Battalion’s members are Indigenous Australians. The 51st FNQR plays an important role in the security of Australia’s borders and in 1999, the Battalion was focused on patrolling for illegal immigrants entering the country.
