Description

Brown leather saddle bag lined with water-proofed cotton. The bag is closed by a large leather flap which fastens at the front with a chrome plated metal buckle. Two straps with chromed buckles are attached to the top of the bag and are used to secure the bag to the saddle. Another longer strap is sewn to the lower left hand side and corresponds to a buckle on the right side. Above this strap is a leather loop. The bag is impressed in several places. On the front of the flap are the makers details 'W.H.MILES MAKER SYDNEY'. Underneath the flap are the markings 'A.C. 3 05' and the lower reverse of the bag is branded 'NSWG 8-1900. 91'.

History / Summary

Saddle bag used by Private Robert Hugh Brickwood during the Boer War. Brickwood originally enlisted in 4 (Queensland Imperial Bushmen) Contingent with the number 172. He was severely wounded at Heilbron on 19 October 1900. After his recovery he re-enlisted and served again with 6 (Queensland Imperial Bushmen) Contingent with the number 656. On 6 November 1915 he enlisted for service in the First World War with the rank of private and the number 2002. He served with 2 Remounts, AIF, until he embarked for return to Australia on 2 September 1916.
