Italian Civilian Valour Medal : Carlo Maida, Calabria
Civilian Valour Medal. Engraved on the reverse with the recipients name, and place and date of award. Obverse: The arms of Savoy on a shield surmounted by a crown with 'AL VALORE CIVILE' around the upper circumference. Beneath the shield is the designers name 'G FARRARIS F'. Reverse: An oak leaf wreath with the recipient's details engraved in the centre. The medal is fitted with a fixed bar loop suspender and a piece of 37 mm ribbon of green, white and red in equal widths.
Instituted in 1848 and awarded in three grades, gold, silver and bronze for acts of bravery by civilians. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916 and his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
