Studio portrait of 3256 Lance Corporal William Herman Zimmer, 57th Battalion, of Geelong West, Victoria. The son of William Henry and Elizabeth Alice Zimmer, William worked as a Clerk of Courts prior to enlistment on 19 September 1916. He embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 16 December 1916. Lance Corporal Zimmer was killed in action on 17 June 1918. According to an eyewitness report recorded in his Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File, “I was with Pte Zimmer when he was killed by a shell near the Regimental Aid Post just outside Buin. His death was instantaneous and it was impossible for him to have suffered…he was a good soldier and a splendid worker, and his loss was felt by all who knew him. He had just been made a L/Cpl just before being killed, The ground was won”
