An unidentified soldier sits on the ground with a dog in his lap, in front of a makeshift shelter. The original inscription descibes how "the dog in the photo was left behind by French civilians when the Germans made their last big push in March 1918. One or two of us scouts including my old friend Jim Rathgeber [212 Private James Henry Rathgeber] who has since been killed looked after it, and it is still with us as a battalion pet. It was very thin when we found it - but now it is far too fat."
An image from the collection of 1010 Sergeant (Sgt) George Edgar Watkins DCM. Sgt Watkins, a painter from Blackburn, Victoria, enlisted on 10 February 1916. He served with the 39th Battalion throughout the war, as a Battalion scout in France and Belgium.
