Outdoor portrait of 1010 Private George Edgar Watkins, 39th Battalion, with three unnamed soldiers. Watkins describes them as "My mates, two of them were killed and the other badly wounded". All of the soldiers are wearing their "Rising Sun" hat badge affixed to the front of their slouch hats.
A photograph from the collection of 1010 Sergeant (Sgt) George Edgar Watkins DCM. Sgt Watkins, a painter from Blackburn, Victoria, enlisted on 10 February 1916. He served with the 39th Battalion throughout the war, as a Battalion scout in France and Belgium.
