History / Summary
Stanley Fremantle Mort. Mort was born in Sydney in November 1889. He travelled to England to study mathematics at Oxford circa 1910, returning home to Australia in February 1914.
Mort travelled back to England but it is unknown exactly when. He was
commissioned into the Royal Marines as a temporary lieutenant on 2 June 1915 and served with them until 1 January 1917 when he transferred to the Royal Engineers. He was mentioned in despatches in May 1918 before being promoted to acting captain on 6 September.
Mort was awarded the Military Cross for actions at the Battle of the Sambre on 4 November 1918. During this battle the Royal Engineers were providing bridging and raft parties in support of the battalions who were attempting to cross the Oise-Sambre Canal.
Mort returned to Australia after the war with his wife and daughter, having married in December 1916. He stayed in Australia for the remainder of his life.
