Description
Group portrait of 5th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery (5th ALTMB) football team. Identified are, back row, fourth from left, 1655 Private Patrick Brady, a tram conductor from Milson’s Point, NSW. Middle row, kneeling far right; 517 Sergeant William Henry Crook, a boot clicker from Redfern, NSW. The officer standing on the right is probably Captain Victor Esmond Douglas Crisp, a telegraphist from Grenfell, NSW and officer commanding the 5th ALTMB. The Battery, as part of the 5th Brigade were situated in Vignacourt from 8th October - 22nd November 1918. The unit diary records that the football team played three times during November, going down 3/6 in their first match against the 18th Battalion, winning their next match 9/0 against the 20th Battalion and losing their last against the 17th Battalion, 3/6.
