Description
Group portrait of 1 Platoon, "A" Coy, 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. Six months after this photo was taken some of the platoon were involved in an incident with communist terrorists at Sungei Bemban. A patrol was ambushed and in the ensuing fight three Australians, 2/2836 Corporal John Norman Allan; 1/3207 Private (Pte) Cedric Charles Ingra and 1/3693 Pte Geoffrey Clyde Fritz were killed. Lieutenant A W Campbell was awarded the Military Cross for his part in the action; Pte A B Falk and Pte L Pennant both won Military Medals; Pte G C Fritz and Cpl L Rodgers were Mentioned in Despatches. Sergeant R S Simpson went on to win a Victoria Cross in Vietnam.
