Description

Group portrait of members of the 57th Battalion, taken shortly before embarking for France. Identified in the photograph, back row, third from left is 2251 Private (Pte) Robert Warnock. A labourer from Swanpool, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Warnock embarked with the 4th Reinforcements, 58th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Orsova on 1 August 1916. On arrival in England he was transferred to the 57th Battalion. Whilst serving on the Western Front he was promoted to Corporal and was later killed in action on 24 March 1917, aged 23 and was buried in the Beaumetz Cross Roads Cemetery, Beaumetz-les-Cambrai, France.
