Description

Studio portrait of NX82924 Lieutenant (Lt) Alan Robert Gubbay, Z Special Unit. A native of Noumea, New Caledonia, Lt Gubbay was a customs clerk from Elizabeth Bay, NSW prior to enlistment. Initially undergoing training with the 2/11 Australian Armoured Car Regiment with the rank of Corporal, his training was curtailed when he was sent to Officer Cadet School. Following his graduation he served with the 2/3rd Infantry Battalion before being transferred to Z Special Force and was one of eight members of that unit sent to reconnoitre Muschu Island off Wewak on the coast of New Guinea. Following an encounter with a Japanese patrol and having lost much of their equipment, several of the men, including Lt Gubbay, managed to put to sea in an attempt to make contact with allied forces, but were never seen again. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Lae Memorial, Papua New Guinea.
