Description

Collection relating to the service in Afghanistan of Lieutenant Marcus Sean Case. Lt Case was deployed to Afghanistan as a Heron Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operator. He died from injuries sustained in a CH-47D Chinook helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan. Lt Case's body was covered with an Australian flag for its journey from Qalat Pron (near the crash site) to Kandahar. The flag had previously been sent to Afghanistan by Ewen Jones MP Member for Herbert at the request of Cpl Jason Buttigieg who suggested it could be flown at Rotary Wing Group Six where a number of Australians were based. The collection consists of 3 documents: a typewritten letter from Ewen Jones MP in response to the request for a flag; a certificate to authenticate the flag sent to Cpl Buttigieg had been flown in the House of Representatives Chamber in Canberra on 8 February 2011; and a typewritten letter from WO2 Michael Turner, the Squadron Sergeant Major of Rotary Wing Group, to the parents of Lt Case describing the circumstances of the flag being used and the desire to have the flag presented to them as a symbol of the regard in which Lt Case was held by the members of Heron and Rotary Wing Group Six. The flag is held in the collection at REL44767.
