Portrait of 4838 Private (Pte) James McPherson, 60th Battalion from Isle of Skye, Scotland. A 25 year old shipwright prior to enlisting at Warwick Farm, NSW on 10 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 15th Reinforcements of the 2nd Battalion from Sydney on 8 March 1916 aboard HMAT Star of England (A15). While undergoing further training in Egypt, he transferred to the 54th Battalion and then to the 57th Battalion. He proceeded to France with the latter in June 1916 and then in January 1917 went to England where he spent three months at the Officers' School as a Batman to a Major. On 8 April 1917, he rejoined the 57th Battalion before transferring to the 60th Battalion later that month. Pte McPherson was killed in action near Hooge, Belgium on 26 September 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
