Formal portrait of 2094 Private (Pte) George Lee, 36th Battalion, in 1916. Prior to his enlistment in April 1916, Pte Lee had trained for three years under the Universal Service Scheme which required compulsory military training of men between the ages of 12 and 26 years. Having embarked from Australia on 24 August 1916 aboard HMAT Anchises, Pte Lee was killed in action on 7 June 1917 at the Battle of Messines, Belgium. He is buried in the Strand Military Cemetery, Hainault, Belgium.
