On the return to Australia from Malaya 2RAR was reorganised into what was known as a Pentropic Battalion with a full Colonel in charge, with 5 Rifle companies and internal structure to support them. The Pentropic concept was discontinued when the Australian Army reorganised for service in Vietnam in 1965. 2RAR was split and its members formed into new 2RAR and 6RAR battalions.
