Description
Group portrait of men of the 2nd Pioneer Battalion awaiting their return to Australia. In the front row, but exact position unknown, is Lieutenant (Lt) Sydney Bede Chambers of Wollstonecraft, NSW. Four lieutenants are in the front row, two on either side of the unidentified captain wearing lighter coloured shirt and trousers and two wound stripes on the left sleeve of his tunic. On the verso Lt Chambers remarks the group is "the present total strength of any Company but with only two officers as they are going back in drib and drab [sic] a few at a time".
