Informal outdoor portrait of 3794 Private (Pte) Albert Dew (seated) and probably 3843 Pte Robert William Motherall, both of 32nd Battalion. Both soldiers were farmers from Burra, South Australia, prior to enlistment, and both embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 21 September 1916 aboard HMAT Commonwealth(A73) for Plymouth, England. Pte Dew joined his battalion on the Western Front near Albert, France, on 7 February 1917. He was wounded in action near Steenvoorde, France, on 15 October 1917 and was treated in No 53 General Hospital, Boulogne before rejoining his unit in early December. Pte Dew was killed in action near Morlancourt, France, on 30 July 1918. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 22 years. Pte Motherall was wounded in action twice and was also injured in a train accident. He recovered from these injuries and returned to Australia for discharge in October 1919.
