Studio portrait of 4990 Private (Pte) Cyril Albert James, 32nd Battalion. A bank clerk from Yeelanna, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 14th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 22 December 1917 aboard HMAT Ulysses (A38) for Suez. He was hospitalised with illness for a month after arrival and then re-embarked for Southampton, England. After training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Vaux-sur-Somme on 10 May 1918. Pte James was killed in action near Amiens on 25 June 1918. He was aged 20 years.
