Studio portrait of 1207 Private (Pte) Roy Barrier Randell, 16th Battalion. A farmer from Tailem Bend, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Melbourne on 22 December 1914 aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) for Egypt. Pte Randell was wounded in action at Gallipoli on 2 May 1915 and was initially evacuated to England for treatment prior to his return to Australia in late December 1915. He was transferred to the 5th Reinforcements of the 32nd Battalion on 4 February 1916 with the Regimental Number 2706 and embarked from Adelaide on 25 March 1916 aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) for Suez. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, in mid-June 1916. Pte Randell was appointed Lance Corporal in July 1916 and to Temporary Corporal the following month. Further promotion to Corporal and Lance Sergeant followed three months later. On 20 January 1917 he was promoted to Sergeant (Sgt) and attended the 5th Divisional Infantry School from mid-February to mid-March 1917. Sgt Randell was detached to the 15th Training Battalion in Codford, England for the first four months of 1918 before rejoining his unit on 10 May 1918. Sgt Randell was killed in action near Corbie, France, on 24 June 1918. He was aged 26 years.
