Informal portrait of 1980 Private (Pte) Henry Murray McGough, 10th Battalion. A blacksmith from Birdwood, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements on 20 April 1915 from Adelaide aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) for Egypt. Pte McGough served at Gallipoli from 8 July 1915 until the battalion was withdrawn to Alexandria in late December 1915. On 26 February 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, the following June. Pte McGough was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 4 September 1916. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 21 years.
