Studio portrait of 3190 Private (Pte) John Joseph McKew (seated) and his brother James, aged 16. Pte McKew attached to the 20th Battalion was a driver prior to enlistment, he embarked from Sydney, NSW with the 7th Reinforcements on board HMAT Suevic (A29) on 20 December 1915. McKew served in France; he was taken on strength and transferred to the 56th Battalion in February 1916. McKew then transferred to the 13th Battalion in March the same year. He was mustered to the rank of Driver (Dvr) on the 9 January 1917 and transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade in March 1917. His brother James died the following year while Dvr McKew was serving overseas. Dvr McKew returned to Australia on the 27 August 1917.
